Anger is a killing thing: it kills the man who angers, for each rage leaves him less than he had been before - it takes something from him.

could you perhaps 'dissect' illumi a bit... i find him so hard to understand sometimes

undercover-witch:

He is complicated and his lack of screen-time doesn’t work in his favor. Illumi has some simple sides to him. First of all he puts family above everything. As the first son Illumi was raised to be a shield, always protecting the family, forever loyal to them and their rules. Illumi isn’t as vicious as people think. He can kill without hesitation and his most violent attack is Needlemen, where he uses people as puppets, but Illumi doesn’t kill all of a sudden. Compare him to Hisoka who gets random blood lusts and goes off on a spree. No, Illumi kills for the job and when attacked. He said during the hunter exam that he killed the sniper because she pissed him off (she kept aiming at him) and he didn’t dispose of the spear guy. Illumi listened to his request to spare his life and let him duel Hisoka.

Illumi is also a very honest guy. He says what’s on his mind, he expresses what he feels and isn’t cautious with his words. In his mind he’s loved by every member of the family, Killua included. If we take this into consideration, a lot of his behavior makes sense. He’s delusional in this aspect and can’t accept anything Killua does that’s outside family rules. Killua having a friend caused him a brain freeze at first. Still, he was as calm as always and steadily got used to it. His theory was actually spot on when he told Killua “Gon’s too bright and you don’t know how to look at him”. Bull’s eye. Another thing about Illumi, he’s calm and very patient.

All in all Illumi is approachable and his trigger is his family. Illumi can carry a conversation, he loves to talk actually, his normal clothes and accessories indicate he’s into fashion, his long hair means he cares about his appearance. Illumi’s rather normal unless the “family line” is crossed. Talk to him about anything, the news, fashion, take him out to dinner, even flirt, but the instant something like “friendship” or inquiring about his life at home becomes topic, he cuts short the conversation and either leaves or changes the subject. Illumi can make friends as long as they’re under a different name, “business partner”, whatever, just not “friend”. And the way he chooses his companions is absolutely normal: whether they can be useful to him. Just like we all do. We wouldn’t befriend a person who’s never there when we need them or who doesn’t share our visions. Same for him.

The only time Illumi was full of bullshit and he knew it was at the hunter exam when he called Killua “passionless puppet of darkness”. That’s a lie and Illumi knows it. Killua was never like them, else why stick needles in him? But, everything for the family, back to point one.

do you have any illumi headcanons about when his siblings were born?

Illumi definitely played favorites. When his siblings were born he was told: this one has talent, this one is so and so, and he took care of them accordingly.

Illumi has the closest relationships with Milluki and Killua. Milluki because he’s the second son and when he was born I’m pretty sure Illumi was like a second dad to him. And Killua because he’s the prodigy. He’s the only one smothered by Illumi.

Alluka spent a lot of time with Killua before being locked up, so I doubt she was too close with Illumi. And Kalluto is Kikyo’s favorite. She took him under her wing since he was very young. Illumi had a role in the assassin training of each sibling, more or less.

Illumi loves his family, but it’s the kind of obsessive, possessive love where he doesn’t want the ones he loves to get out of his sight. He wants to be in permanent contact with everyone, to make sure they follow the family rules. Obeying the family code is the only “good way” Illumi knows about. But he’s adapting. I think at one point he looked like:image
